MARQUETTE — Not all artwork involves paint and a brush. Recycled metal can be part of it, too.

Marquette’s Mavis Farr, who operates Mineral Spirit Gallery, demonstrated forging and forming silver on Thursday at Zero Degrees Gallery, located at 525 N. Third St.

The event was part of the second annual First Thursdays Art Tour, which is a monthly, self-guided tour inside local art galleries and studios that takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month from June through October.

The silversmith, who said she is a member of Zero Degrees Gallery, said the “vehicle for her demo” on Thursday was a fun activity involving a ring sizer.

An individual could use that sizer to determine ring size, and Farr then would make a custom sterling silver ring while they waited.

“I’m pretty much self-taught,” Farr said. “I had a few casting classes at one point, but I just always had an interest in jewelry.”

Her jewelry is crafted from 100% recycled metal and “ethically sourced” gemstone jewelry.

“I like to refer to it as affordable heirloom quality,” Farr said.

Her pieces, which can be bought at mineralspiritjewelry.com, include Persephone earrings made from pyrite, brass and sterling silver, and Swoon earrings created from sterling silver, 12-karat gold fill, tanzanite and topaz.

A variety of local artists are participating in this year’s First Thursdays Art Tour.

Organizers said the event was inspired by the Art Stroll held during the city of Marquette’s Art Week and by a similar series originated in Portland, Oregon.

For more information on the tour, visit mqtcompass.com/first-thursdays/ or follow it on Facebook and Instagram. A map of participating galleries and studio locations is available at the city of Marquette Arts and Culture Office, located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library.

The First Thursdays Art Tour is sponsored by Edge Partnerships and Travel Marquette, and partnered with the Marquette Office of Arts and Culture as well as the Lake Superior Art Association; and founded by Graci Gallery.
